Connecting the world,
one story at a time.
Kindi is a mobile app that connects students who need additional reading support to a qualified network of virtual reading volunteers. Through the power of technology and community, Kindi is on a mission to create a world where every child always has someone to read a story with, regardless of location or financial means.
Due to issues like at-home language barriers, limited educational resources, and long working hours for parents, millions of children around the world still have no one to practice reading with outside of school. In the US alone, 25% of children are not read to at home,* leading to reading and comprehension gaps across student populations.

Match elementary students in need to teacher-nominated reading volunteers from neighboring high school and middle school classrooms.
Now you can help change that. Here's how:
Each student has a personalized user account where they can choose stories and content uploaded by their teacher.
Qualified volunteers receive a notification when a reading request is made.
After a quick ice breaker, the student and their volunteer are connected into their virtual reading session.
Sessions are live over audio, and all session data is recorded and accessible within private teacher admin portals.

New perspectives
Safe and secure learning environment
Backed by the MIT Media Lab, Kindi is already helping Syrian refugee students in Lebanon learn English.
Inspired by the need to help Syrian refugee children in Lebanon learn English, we created Kindi as a simple way to connect two people over a live, digital shared-reading experience. After months of research and piloting, made possible through grant funding from the MIT Media Lab's Refugee Learning Accelerator and Shuttleworth Foundation, we are now opening up our technology to more teachers and students around the globe.
Check out how Kindi is already making an impact and connecting communities across the globe.
In the news
How can Kindi benefit my students?
Kindi offers students an easy way to access additional reading practice outside of school by connecting them to reading volunteers from either your own school district or Kindi's global network.
Can I control who my students read with?
Yes. If you choose to create your own private Kindi reading network in your school or district, then all participating teachers can control who reads with who.
How much does it cost to use Kindi in my class?
Kindi is currently free to use. We are, however, selective about the partners we work with during these early stages.
As a teacher, can I listen to the sessions?
Yes, all reading sessions are recorded and accessible for quality assurance purposes.
What kind of reading data does Kindi provide?
During every session, we track and record every word a student mispronounces. This data is made available to both the student and their teacher.
I'm outside the US, can my class still use Kindi?
Yes, of course! Kindi started in Lebanon.
